Neoliberalism and home care | Linchpin – website of Ontario anarchist organization Common Cause
“without the massive amounts of unpaid work done in the home, primarily by women, capitalism would grind to a halt.”
-
Pressure that gives women fewer options other than to engage in work that is underpaid or unpaid “is a strategic way of maintaining profit for a few… The unpaid labour that is often invisible is strategic in that.”
-
“most obvious” way neoliberalism has increased pressure to engage in unpaid work in Canada is “in cutbacks of what we call the welfare state.” This refers to the array of social programs enacted mostly after the Second World War which provide services in ways that socialize the costs and which support people living in need. Particularly since the mid-1990s in Canada, the welfare state has been under attack by business lobbies and many governments.

“Without government or state, how does political autonomy work in the Zapatista zone? How do the people organize to get things done, like realizing a water system for the community?”
-
In Roberto Arenas, like all Zapatista villages, the community assembly—with representatives from each household—meets in the community hall, weekly—or more frequently if there are things to decide. Together they determine the manner and method of developing their own village, taking into account what resources are available. Decisions are made by the assembly, preferably by consensus. If there is a split and no clear decision, the debates and discussions go on until the assembly reaches a consensus. Occasionally, this can take days on end. This is participatory democracy in action, warts and all.

“A number of anarchist journals and websites have criticised my own and my comrades’ activism in recent months and weeks. Criticism from the right is easy to dismiss. When it comes from comrades I know and respect, I need to take it seriously and come up with a considered response.”
-
Some people have accused me of wanting to replace monarchist pageantry with some other self-promoting media spectacle. Actually, the project is to dissolve all such spectacle, opening the door to celebratory street parties, occupations, picket lines and, in general, popular revolution as ‘the carnival of the oppressed’. Glimpses of this have begun breaking out during moments of victory across the Arab world and more recently across Greece and Spain. Humour, dance and theatre maximise the difficulties for the media in portraying us as thugs. Anyway, liberation should be fun. As Emma Goldman said: ‘If I can’t dance in your revolution, it’s not my revolution’.
-
it seems ironic that some anarchist organizations mirror many of the worst aspects of their Leninist and Trotskyist counterparts. They jealously guard their sectarian boundaries, promote their supposedly ‘correct’ theories, insist on being worthy and boring, insist that their radical ideas are the vital ingredient that the working class needs. The truth is that the working class doesn’t need any of this. Workers need information about their own solidarity, their own unity in action, their own ability to stand up to the bosses and liberate themselves, their own human creativity and potential. As workers become collectively empowered, they’ll work out their own theories, making use, perhaps, of some of the ideas we activists can provide.

Anti-Imperialism and the Iranian Revolution | libcom.org
“Arya Zahedi looks at the problems associated with anti-imperialist ideology during the Iranian revolution to cast light on struggles against the Islamic regime today. “
-
This article attempts to discuss how, in the years leading up to the Iranian Revolution, objective and subjective factors contributed to the development of an ideology that was an amalgam of socialism, nationalism, and religious imagery which can broadly be described as a form of third-world populism. The contention here is that the struggle against imperialism so dominated political discourse in the two decades leading up to the revolution that it, in many ways, became a fetter on the struggle for socialism.

The Mind of Egypt’s Military – By Michael Wahid Hanna | The Middle East Channel
“The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has been ruling Egypt since the fall of Hosni Mubarak. Many think that it aims to re-impose de facto military rule, and rumors swirl about its counter-revolutionary schemes and alleged secret deals.”

Crisis in Africa: capitalism is to blame
“In the Horn of Africa, a famine is raging that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people. For the first time in 30 years, the UN has officially declared a famine. The drought in East Africa has resulted in a food crisis across Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya that has affected over 12 million people”
-
the food crisis is a direct result of the colossal underdevelopment of the region, alongside the use of the most primitive agricultural methods. Under capitalism however, it is not possible to solve these problems. Farmers are too poor to purchase better tools or fertilisers, and the common grazing land that many villages rely on is increasingly fenced off and privatised for cash crops; coffee, cut flowers, beans and other ‘luxuries’ destined for western markets.

Anarchism, Foucault and the “Postmoderns” | Anarchist news dot org
“This article is published in the French anarchist journal Réfractions, May 2008 with several other texts about postmodernity, including one by Tomas Ibanez, to which this article refers.”
-
Historically, the originality of anarchism rested in its critique and denunciation of the pitfalls and lies of modernity, but also, of course, in its capacity to think and adopt social and political practices which broke off severely with such a modernity; it broke up the schemes and procedures of the social and economic order that appeared in the last three centuries; and all this stemmed from new forces, new practices and new subjectivities, with the uncompromising rejection of all representation, the adoption of direct action, federalism, association and autonomy of beings struggling for their emancipation

Treacherous Sympathy with Muslim Women – Qantara.de
“Ever since the attacks of 9/11, feminists in the West have increasingly used the theme of the oppression of women in Islam as justification for war and domination. This strategy of using this rhetoric of “saving the women” in the name of “civilization” is an old ploy used many times in the past by Western imperialists, writes Leila Ahmed”

“What’s the difference between Bay Area Rapid Transit and the Mubarak regime in Egypt? That’s an irresponsible question. They are not at all alike.
