  • “We must acknowledge, sit with, and address the sexual violence that has, is, and will occur in and around Tahrir Square. How do we do this work in a responsible and ethical manner that is in solidarity with Egypt’s ongoing (and multiple) revolutions?”

    • There is no universal, ungendered, unclassed, and anonymous protestor or body of protestors. And yet, writing about rape in Syria, sexual assault in Egypt is somehow a “social issue” and, shunted off to those boxes called “gender studies,” “women’s issues,” or “social/cultural dynamics,” comfortably outside politics. We can no longer afford such comfort.
  • “Embrace local and co-operative models to build a decentralized, steady-state economy. So says a new book by Michael Lewis and Pat Conaty, but does it convince?”

  • “Silvia Walby’s 1990 book sets out a dual-systems approach to theorizing capitalism and patriarchy, synthesising Marxist and radical feminist perspectives.”

    • Sylvia Walby provides an overview of feminist theoretical debates – Marxism, radical and liberal feminism, post–structuralism and dual systems theory. She shows how each can be applied to six key social structures: wage labour, housework, culture, sexuality, violence and the state. Her arguments are backed by drawing on empirical findings. Walby argues that patriarchy has been vigorously adaptable to the changes in women′s position, and that some of women′s hard–won social gains have been transformed into new traps.

  • “Faced with persecution and an increasingly dangerous climate in Sudan in recent years, a number of Sudanese activists have fled to the Egyptian capital Cairo, hoping to continue their work in safety from abroad.”

  • “Idle No More has organized the largest mass mobilizations of indigenous people in recent history. What sparked it off and what’s coming next?”

    • It took weeks of protests, flash mobs, letters, rallies, and thousands of righteous tweets, but Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper finally caved. He agreed to a meeting with the woman who had been petitioning him for twenty-four days, subsisting on fish broth, camped in a tepee in the frozen midwinter, the hunger striker and Chief of the Attawapiskat Theresa Spence.
    • The Idle No More movement arose as a response to what organizers call the most recent assault on indigenous rights in Canada: Bill C-45, which passed on December 14. Bill C-45 makes changes to the Indian Act, removes environmental protections, and further erodes the treaties with native peoples through which Canada was created.
  • “Overnight police raids in several Turkish cities have resulted in the arrest of 15 human rights lawyers known for defending individuals’ right to freedom of speech and victims of police violence, Amnesty International said.”

    • The police operation, which was reportedly aimed at clamping down on a banned left-wing group, included arrests in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir and targeted residential addresses as well as law offices. Headquarters and branches of the Contemporary Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) and the Peoples’ Law Office in Istanbul were among the addresses included in the raids.

  • “George Orwell’s famous 1938 account of the Spanish Revolution and Civil War, from his point of view as a volunteer in the POUM militia.

Though the POUM were socialists, he wrote “as far as my purely personal preferences went I would have liked to join the Anarchists.””
